IN references to journals the author has tried to follow the con-
ventions laid down for British Abstracts. Books are cited originally
by full title and publishing date, and afterwards by author's name
and book title. The "Report on Materials of Construction"
referred to above is abbreviated to " Materials of Construction".
Temperature figures throughout the text are given in Degrees
Centigrade unless specifically stated in other terms. It is appre-
ciated that this may present some difficulty to those who are more
used to a Fahrenheit scale, but the author feels that the balance of
advantage is on the side of Centigrade units.
